It’s now September and the lazy days of summer are over. The kids are back in school and that means getting up early and out the door on-time. A change in routine can bring a fair amount of stress to everyone in the family. How can you lessen this common situation? Help your mind stay in a more positive and balanced state by creating intentional transitions.

Stress makes it more difficult to slim down, stay fit, healthy and relaxed. Ongoing stress can make us tired, irritable, sick and overweight.

Here are examples of some intentional transitions you can create to help relieve stress:

Create a nurturing morning transition. Customers often share with us how stressful a weekday morning can be getting the kids out of bed, fed and off to school in a timely manner. We suggest you begin by waking up just 15 minutes earlier. Hydrate your body by drinking a glass of water, spend five minutes doing gentle stretching and five minutes reading. Now, softly wake up each person in your family by giving them a hug and a compliment to ease into their day. How nice will that feel?

Create a transition center near the front door of your home. Set-up a designated area for each member of your family to gather any items they’ll need for the day. This can help lessen the stress of everyone racing around the house looking for their homework, keys, lunch, etc. Each person is responsible for placing the items they need for the day in their specific space. It’s not up to Mom or Dad to rummage through the house finding those items. It’s a way to teach your kids to get organized and take personal responsibility. A little bit of organization can go a long way to lessening stress for each member of the family.

Create a peaceful transitional environment in your car. When you drive the kids to school turn the radio, video games and movies OFF. Time in the car is perfect for relaxing and creative conversations. Ask the kids to share imaginary stories, tell jokes, and sing their favorite songs. This calm transition from home to school sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Create a calming transition by breathing. At the end of your work day, take a big breath and exhale slowly before you get into your car. This simple practice takes just a moment. This simple transition helps you leave work at work. Before you walk into your house, take a big breath and exhale slowly before you walk in the door. Look around and take a moment to truly appreciate the comfort of being home. Deep breathing can help you feel calm and centered.

Create a transition from being in homework mode to being at rest. Teach your kids to finish all of their homework before dinner. If they are still doing homework late at night, their stress level stays elevated and this can cause sleep problems and a negative association with school and studying. Kids need plenty of to time relax and unwind at the end of their day.

Create a whole body transition by walking after dinner. Skip dessert and go for a walk around the neighborhood. A family walk at the end of the day is a relaxing way to get some fresh air and help your mind and body transition into your bedtime routine.

It’s common for both adults and children to feel overwhelmed and stressed as they adjust to a schedule change, especially when it’s time for back-to-school.
